Web site administration and web page maintenance form an integral part of the work to be done for ensuring an uninterrupted online presence. This work is usually handled by a contracted professional webmaster; to which extend is determined by the way the domain is hosted.

The primary function of the webmaster is to take care of regularly updating the content of web pages so that site visitors will be able to find valid and correct information at any given time. Outdated content, such as expired prices and discontinued product or service offers, does not only make bad impressions on potential customers but the absence of "fresh" content commonly also negatively affects a domain's ranking performance in search engines, i.e. the web pages become difficult to find amongst those of competitors.

Furthermore, the functionality of links contained within the web pages as well as the proper display of images and other content have to be checked on a regular basis. The programming code of online web pages is exposed to influences that could have an impact on how it functions. Even the smallest loss in the code's completeness could render web pages useless to site visitors e.g. due to broken internal links that prevent access to pages the site visitor wants to see. Non-displaying pictures can also be the cause of frustrating visitor experiences.

Regardless of the reasons for and signs of lost functionality, it creates a poor image of the website's owner, will lead to dwindling visitor numbers, and ultimately to the loss of business or any other kind of support to be attracted through the online presence. A loss in site visitors is also harmful to the ranking position of the web pages in search engines, which might eventually de-list the pages from their indexes.  To be continued
